The Rise and Inevitable Fall of Lush
Lush rose to prominence very obviously off of the back of The Body Shop's fall from grace. And, in fairness, they have done a wonderful job at correcting and improving on the business Anita Roddick created. However, it's so interesting that they seem to be following the same path of fast growth, cause marketing, some early scandals and scepticism in their audience. In fact, it's trajectory has been so close that it seems they are very at risk of the same cause for downfall as The Body Shop, wherein they have placed themselves voluntarily on a pedestal that invites harsher criticism. Is it fair? Probably not, there are companies doing far worse, but now that they are no longer the underdog, they are not protected by the halo effect and that leaves them all too susceptible.

The Life and Death of The Body Shop Founder Anita Roddick

Anita Roddick is really a legend in retailing, from popularising concepts like anti-animal testing which is now commonplace in cosmetics, to cause marketing and even fair trade, she made an enormous impact on the industry before her shockingly untimely death in 2007. Chemist here who focuses on science communication and cosmetic chemistry. 👉🏼 I think part of their downfall could also be growth of science education and higher education among consumers about greenwashing - and the understanding that natural is not better, but actually often times worse for the environment (synthesising vitamin C or menthol in the lab is much "cleaner" and more eco green than growing and watering plants, harvesting them, transporting them in cars that use fuel to factories, extracting them etc). We are not feeding everyone on the planet. We don't have space to grow all cosmetic ingredients.

Haven't set foot in Lush since a sales assistant swiped lotion up my arm without asking first. To make matters worse, when I complained online I was told "Oh, they're trained to do that!" as if it was a reason why I was being unreasonable. I'm allergic to lemon grass; if it had been a different lotion she could have put me in the hospital.

I don’t think people really understand how expensive the raw ingredients are and how much MORE expensive the ethical raw ingredients are. I’m seeing a theme in the comments and no it is not going to be the “standard” to be ethical bc that requires the whole word to be ethical and the reality is that is not possible. What is possible is to find the few and far between that choose to do the right thing. Also palm oil is not all bad and there is very so ethical fair trade palm oil

I remember I worked at a DavidsTea (canadian here!) (was another culty brand selling loose leaf tea on a country level and took a lot of marketing and product inspo from companies like Lush, Lululemon, Starbucks, and The Body Shop). While I was working there part-time, I'd been approached and harrassed by one of the Lush managers in the same mall to come and work for her. I was flattered at first, but I was also a student, so I really only had time for the one job and I told her that, but she just WOULD NOT STOP. If I wanted to shop at Lush, I had to buy online or go to another mall just so I wouldn't have to deal with her. Another time, I went into another Lush that I wasn't familiar with, and within 30 seconds of talking this worker GRABS my arm and starts scrubbing shit on it. Without asking. I was super taken aback. Thankfully, I didn't have any allergies! I left super quickly.

I remember loving the different shapes and colours and smells of Lush. I loved their philosophy behind the brand, but somehow over the years they disappeared from my radar, so to say. I think they are still getting sales because I’ve saw a full store in Barcelona when I visited the city (I didn’t enter the store though). Sad to hear all negative things workers have to say about it. I never bought a lot of things from lush (maybe a body cream, a couple bath bombs and a lip scrub - I do remember loving the lip scrub - it was pink and smelled like candy😊). I remember once having a solid shampoo in a bar and I hated using it! I got my hair stuck all over it. 😤 lol

I remember being a young kid during the rise of lifestyle/beauty UA-camrs with massive hauls of Lush and Bath and Body Works among other brands. Lush was definitely a status symbol because preteens certainly couldn’t spend much there. Now that I’m an adult, the products are fun for a gimmick but too expensive for daily use and not high performing enough for what they are.

I love their Eau Roma Water toner and a bottle last like a year so I buy once a year. Recently we went into one being wanted to finally buy that one ridiculously expensive cream they sell. Tested it and it felt different. So nah. It was supposed to be part of my 35 th bday gift. I got a bath bomb and a massage bar because those are amazing. I was going to get more of the Sleepy cream but the prices on everything sky rocketed and I was just like I’ll find a better one that last. Like I know this sounds horrible but I have silky underwear powder I’ve had for a longggg time along with foot powder and it’s still fine 🤷🏻‍♀️. But I can’t pay $12.50 for a bath bomb. I got the sex bomb just as a bday treat and the last time I bought a perfume from them it stained my clothes (yes I applied it properly etc) so I don’t trust their sprays. But also do they order in now?? When I used to go employees would be making them etc and I watched an employee grab a bubble bar out of a box for a customer. I’ll get my toner and I do like their soap but nothing there is special enough for that much money. Also it’s gives me and my husband headaches being in there 😖

I have worked for Lush, and I have to say that I had a phenomenal experience out of all of the retail shops I’ve worked at. It’s extremely dependent on the shop manager and team. Sometimes there was micromanaging but at the end of the day, my job was to sell. The complaints about this is true, but you must remember this is how capitalism works. Lush as a company, their prices, their sourcing, is all justified in my opinion for the quality that you receive. It is still a luxury sustainable brand, not everything is for everyone.

Ah, lush. I didn't really find that the whole activism side of it was ever for me even tho I did find it a good thing if more companies support good causes small or big. I just genuinely loved the natural vibe and smell of the products but hated getting jumped by workers. Im very sensitive and socially anxious and being in such a sensory overloaded place I just want to browse and dissapear in my own thoughts and daydream before buying anything so getting disturbed and followed made me really uncomfortable. I also got the sense that the workers were forced to by this particular manager figure that always had this evil sadistic aura about them looming from the back of the store. After a while I noticed I had to mentally prepare to go there and try deal with it and that combined with the ridiculous rapid increasing prices made me realise its something I can miss altho I still occasionally wish I could go in when walking by 😂 kinda sucky if they go down cause the products are nice. But I do feel like they might need to change it up a bit.

Other girls were getting more and I brought up what he did to me. They went silent and red. So the girls felt the need to send this man their nudes to get hours. What a great video! It reminds me of Rituals Cosmetics. They sell home and body products using ancient and Asian rituals as a selling point. They're popular in Europe with stores in many cities. However, they're also controversial. They complained about a large pride flag across from their Amsterdam office, despite participating in Amsterdam Pride. They faced criticism for strict makeup rules for women and requiring employees to cover tattoos (the first even got to the Dutch human rights council). They also often use cultural appropriation to sell their products. Despite this, they do very well financially for now.
